How to Take Your Before Photo (and Why Your 3-Month Self Will Thank You

Let’s be real: when you’re in the thick of postpartum hair loss, the last thing you want to do is document the "thinning."

You’re already finding enough hair in the shower drain to knit a small
sweater for your newborn. But trust me on this—you need that before photo.

The Science of the Slow Grow:

Postpartum hair shedding happens because your hair cycles are playing catch-up. During pregnancy, high estrogen levels keep your hair in the anagen (growth) phase. Once those levels drop, a huge chunk of hair enters the telogen (resting/shedding) phase all at once.

Because hair only grows about half an inch a month, the "new growth" is subtle. It’s like watching a puppy grow—you don’t notice it day-to-day until suddenly your "little" dog is knocking over the coffee table. The photo is your proof that the vitamins are working their magic beneath the surface.

The Perfect Progress Shot: Your Checklist

The 30-60-90 Rule

Consistency isn’t just for sleep training! Set a recurring alarm on your phone to retake your photo every 30 days. By Day 60, you'll start seeing those tiny "baby hairs" along the hairline. By Day 90 (dare I say a thicker hairline than before?)

The Part is Key: Use a comb to create a clean center part or a side part where you
notice the most thinning. This exposes the scalp clearly.

Natural Light: Stand facing a window. Overhead bathroom lights create weird shadows
that can make hair look thinner (or thicker) than it actually is.

Consistency: Choose a specific "spot" in your house. Use the same wall and the same
time of day.

The "Selfie Stick" Distance: Hold your phone at arm’s length or have a partner take it
from about 2 feet away.

Consistency in distance is the difference between "Is that a bald
spot?" and "Oh, that’s just a close-up of my pores."

That’s the "Aha!" moment where you realize you’re not just imagining the volume—it’s actually
back.

A Note from Jamie:

Listen, I know you’re tired. I know 'take a photo of my scalp' is probably #452 on your to-dolist, right behind 'find matching socks' and 'drink coffee before it gets cold.' But do it anyway!

Looking back at your Day 1 photo when you hit Day 90 is the ultimate mood booster. It’s the proof that you’re taking care of you, one gummy (or capsule) at a time. Plus, you’ll want evidence for when you brag to your mom-group that your hair is officially back in the game.
